If you missed the Cactus Cup over the weekend, you missed a great event.  We had pros from all over the world competing right in our community. XC World Champion Christophe Saucer and 24 Hour Champion Tinker Juarez were among the competitors.  Not only was the competition level high, the opportunity to participate was there for all.

Thanks to all the volunteers this weekend.  Gary Gorup, Jared Fisher, Heather Fisher, Rob Hutchinson, Kenny O’Connell, Todd Christensen, and Kendra O’Connell really stepped up to the plate.  Their efforts helped ensure the event will be held here again next year.

This Week’s Rides:

6 a.m.   Jeep Road to Red Canyon (incl Satan’s)
Meet at the upper parking lot
5:30 p   Badger Pass

I’m excited about Pumpkinman!  This is who I have heard of who is doing it from our team, either solo or as part of a relay team.

  • Regan Stokes
  • Sarah Wixom
  • Todd Christensen
  • Jason Newbry
  • Christa Watson
  • Lacey Newbry
  • Paul Taylor
  • Samye Peterson
  • David Hawkins
  • Spencer Holt
  • Trent Lee
  • Heather Fisher
  • Jared Fisher
  • Orion Fisher
  • Deborah Kaleikini-Johnson

And I didn’t hear if Emilee, Kate, or Sarah got in.  I know you were thinking about it…
Since you have asked me about swimming instruction, this is what I have come up with:

Here are a few options:

Anytime Private lessons:
$65 an hour from Kara or Jackie who are both really good.  This $65 can be split by as many people as we can get together at one time, up to about 20 people and can be done at any pool or at the lake.

Saturday Afternoons
Kara Roberts teaches a group that is training specifically for this race on Saturday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. at Desert Breeze.  She is really nice and really good and works a lot on technique.  If you are super beginner, you would have to call her and arrange a beginner time.  Drop in fee is $15.  Her email is araklv@hotmail.com.

Morning Masters
5:30-7:00 a.m. at Desert Breeze
$25 a month
All levels

Viva Las Vegas Night Masters (M-Th nights and Saturday mornings)
7-8:30 p.m. Mon-Thursday at Palo Verde Pool (behind Costco in Summerlin)
Super fun group of mostly triathletes.
Nice outdoor pool with NO CHLORINE!  (Saltwater instead)
I love swimming with these guys and girls because they are so nice and it feels awesome swimming in warm water in the cold night air
All levels of swimmers welcome.
$20 per month if you swim with them once a week
$40 per month unlimited
$5 per time, but not preferred

Email me for the team price on triathlon uniforms.Just keep swimming….

2 more days until CACTUS CUP!

We are hosting this huge and exciting event in Mountain’s Edge and we need your help!

1)       get your kids and their friends to the kids events at Exploration Park on Saturday:

    • 3:00 at Exploration Peak for the expo, raffle, freebies, and FULL SIZE rock climbing wall
    • 7:00 for the kids bike race and bike safety rodeo, any kind of bike ok, helmet required, cool prizes

2)       Sign up with Matt Child to volunteer at the event on any of the three days.
3)       Print out flyers about the kids race (attached) to pass out to your neighbors, soccer teams, etc.
4)       It’s not just for pros and kids, adults can race too, even beginners.  If you’re on the team, just call Matt for a free entry to any event!

What exactly is Cactus Cup?
This Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, one of the nation‘s most famous mountain bike festivals is being held right here in Mountain’s Edge.  Our Mountain’s Edge Team is hosting the 2008 Cactus Cup mountain bike festival and using it to help fight women’s ovarian cancer and to promote kids safety and fitness.  Professional and Olympian athletes will be here from around the country competing for the biggest cash purse in mountain biking.  Friday night, racers will race up Exploration Peak!  Saturday and Sunday mornings they will race on the mountain bike trails in Red Rock Canyon, and on Saturday night, Buffalo Drive will be closed down to all traffic and opened to a world-class bike race with athletes from all over the nation competing in laps around the median.  It is a fat tire crit race, where riders race their mountain bikes on the street.  Between the Semi-Pro Men and Pro Women, the race course will be opened up to all local kids for a really cool FREE kids race with all the professional lighting, sound, and announcing the pros get! Kids can come early to get their bike checked for safety and to participate in a FREE bike safety rodeo to learn basic street safety and bike handling skills.  No need to pre-register the kids, as this race is free and open to all kids 3-13 years old, with any kind of bike and helmet.  There will be free food, drinks, and live entertainment by Misty Murphy and Sparkle Motion.  A full schedule of events, including maps and races for local adults too, from beginner to pro, can be found on www.cactuscuplasvegas.com.

USA Crits Finals
If you like this, we are also doing a kids race between the pros at the Mandalay Bay USA Crits Finals on Thursday night, September 25.  This is very fun for the kids and very exciting for the adults to watch as professional and amateur cyclists from around the country race for the USA national title.  It will be televised live on Universal Sports.  There are still spots for adults to race at www.finals.usacrits.com.  Kids do not need to register in advance and their race is free.
